Office of the General Counsel

The Office of the General Counsel is comprised of Legal Affairs, Risk Management Division, and the Confiscation/Forfeiture Unit.

The Office of the General Counsel is responsible for advising and representing the Sheriff and the agency with respect to all legal matters arising from official BSO business. We serve all areas of the agency to include DLE, DODCC, FRES, and Administration.

Areas in which the Office of the General Counsel provides legal services include: litigation, contracts, risk management, detention, labor and employment, confiscations, forfeiture, child protective investigations, drug court, pre-trial services, arrest/search and seizure, court procedures, policies and general legal advice. Staff attorneys also conduct legal training for the detention academy, in-service training, and develop and conduct training in high liability areas upon request.

Ron Gunzburger

General Counsel Ron Gunzburger has practiced law in Broward County since 1988. In his work at Broward Sheriff’s Office, he also holds the position of Executive Director and serves on the Sheriff’s Senior Command Staff. Outside of his duties at BSO, Mr. Gunzburger also concurrently serves as Senior Advisor to Maryland Governor Larry Hogan. Prior to joining BSO in January 2013, Mr. Gunzburger served as General Counsel and Director of Administration for the Broward County Property Appraiser's Office for a decade. Additionally, Mr. Gunzburger has also previously served as a civil litigation partner in a "Top 100" national law firm, as General Counsel/Chief Operating Officer of a dot-com corporation based in Washington, DC, as an Assistant Florida Attorney General (RICO Unit), as an Assistant Public Defender, and as a congressional aide on Capitol Hill.

Mr. Gunzburger earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from George Washington University and his law degree cum laude from Vermont Law School. In 1998, he was honored to receive the South Florida Business Journal's "40 Under 40" Award for achieving career excellence before age 40. Mr. Gunzburger has also been active over the years in many civic, legal, civil rights, and LGBT groups, including serving several terms on the City of Fort Lauderdale Charter Revision Board. He has resided in Broward County since 1968.
